Non-Profit Resources

I thought it would be helpful to create a non-profit resources page that you can use when starting a non-profit organization. I’ll add to it as I learn more, but you’ll notice that in the future I will reference this page quite often. I recommend bookmarking it for your reference and convenience.

Many of these non-profit resources are free to use. Some of the require a one-time payment or monthly subscription. All deliver incredible value for the person starting a non-profit organization.

Non-Profit Website Development & Blogging

WordPress: One of my absolute favorite non-profit resources is WordPress. WordPress is the world’s number one blog publishing platform. Free and easily customizable with wonderful support in forums and around the Internet. All of the non-profit websites I’ve developed use WordPress.

WooThemes: The ultimate non-profit resource for premium looking WordPress themes. The i Start a Non-Profit website is built using the Canvas theme from WooThemes.

Non-Profit Website Hosting

Hostgator: They have an awesome wizard to help you get started with your non-profit website. Easy to use, 1-click automatic WordPress installation, and excellent customer service. Highly recommended if you need an easy, no-nonsense non-profit website up and running quickly.

Non-Profit Newsletter & Marketing

AWeber: The Internet’s most powerful email opt-in service and an incredible non-profit newsletter / email marketing / broadcasting tool. This is what I use to build my email list and non-profit newsletter. Non-Profit Accounting

Wave Accounting: Wave is an accounting application (real, double-entry accounting, though you don’t need to understand accounting to use it). Wave helps you file your taxes, providing everything you or your accountant will need to file quickly and accurately. Best of all – it is free!

Non-Profit Resources for Legal

LegalZoom: It’s not going to meet all of your non-profit legal needs, but it will help you get your 501c3 status started.

Non-Profit Outsourcing

Elance: Find a world of talent for your non-profit online at Elance. I’ve found Elance useful for short design projects and research.

oDesk: Another outsourcing website for freelancers, IT companies, programmers and web designers from abroad.

99Designs: This is a unique website that you can use if you need graphic design work done (web site theme, logo, brochure or newsletter design). It’s in a contest format. You submit the description of what you want, and designers will compete against each other to win money.

Non-Profit Resources for Tracking Website Visitors

Clicky: Clicky is just like Google Analytics, except it’s easier to use, and you can view how many people are on your site (and what they are doing) in real time! Clicky offers a free service and a paid service with premium features.

Google Non-Profit Website Optimizer: This is another free tool from Google where you can test different webpages of the same content, only changing one or two things, so you can see which one works/converts best. It’s basically a website optimizer testing tool.
